Cumbria
Bordering onto Scotland is the most north-western county of Cumbria. Made up of six districts, Allerdale, Barrow-in-Furness, Carlisle, Copeland, Eden and South Lakeland. Best known for the Lake District National Park an area of around 30 miles across and contains England’s highest mountains (four over 3000ft) and some of England’s biggest lakes.
Several notable people have been associated with Cumbria, including Beatrix Potter, William Wordsworth and John Ruskin.
Cumbria contains the Eden Valley, part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the western end of Hadrian’s Wall and the best part of 180 miles of coastline. Hadrian’s Wall is an important monument built by the Romans in Britain; it stretches 73 miles from Wallsend near Newcastle across to the Solway in North West Cumbria. Cumbria is also offers the spectacular glacial ribbon lakes.
