The Park & the surrounding area
Challaborough Bay Holiday Park nestles in a lovely peaceful valley of rolling farmland in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It has it`s own Blue Flag beach with direct access & the South West Coastal Path runs down one headland across the beach and then back up the other headland.
Just offshore lies the fascinating Burgh Island which has a world famous Art Deco Hotel where many famous visitors have stayed including Agatha Christie and has been the setting for an episode of the “Poirot” TV series. It also has an interesting old pub, The Pilchard Inn (13th century).
There is no direct access to the island from the beach but it is only 10-15 mins walk up and over the headland to Bigbury-on-Sea which has beautiful beaches across which you can walk to the island, but only when the tide is out. When the tide is in the island is cut off and can only be reached by the fascinating Sea Tractor Ferry which carries passengers high above the water while it`s large wheels run along the sand beneath the sea.
On site facilities include live entertainment in the clubhouse; a fantastic recently built indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, solarium, & fitness suite. There is a Kid`s Club and a separate Amusement Centre & Children`s playrooms with Ball Pool etc. There is also a Surf Shop, a shop selling groceries, alcohol, newspapers, gifts, beach goods, books and also rents DVD`s, and there is also a smart little launderette tucked away at the back of the park. All these facilities are smart & discreet.
The Bar/Restaurant overlooks the beach and has tables, chairs & parasols where you can sit and watch the surfers whilst enjoying a meal or a drink. The beach, as well as being a Blue Flag beach, is one of the top surfing beaches in the country.
Right on the beach there is another, Privately owned, Café/Takeaway, beautifully situated on the rocks above the beach, where you can bring your own drinks (Wine etc.) and sit at tables outside & enjoy Burgers, Pizzas, Fish & Chips etc. There can`t be a better-situated place to sit and enjoy food & drink; on a sunny day it is absolutely amazing, with Burgh Island just offshore!
The area has many lovely old pubs tucked away down the fascinating winding narrow South Hams roads.

A visit to Torcross is a wonderful day out. From the village the narrow road runs just behind the beach of Start Bay, with the beach immediately on one side and Slapton Ley, the large freshwater nature reserve immediately on the other. It is a fascinating place, fresh water on one side of your car & the sea on the other.
The beach was used during the Second World War to rehearse the D-Day landings, and the villages just inland were evacuated as, during the exercise, they were shelled as the troops practised moving inland after landing on the beach.
Unfortunately hundreds of American soldiers were killed when German U-boats attacked some of them after arriving on the scene by chance.
Half way along the beach there is a large memorial erected by the Americans thanking the local people, and at the edge of Slapton Ley in Torcross there is a Sherman Tank, which was salvaged from the sea some years later.
