Winchelsea Sands Holiday Park
Winchelsea Sands is a lovely family site, with almost all caravans privately owned. The facilities are:
Outdoor heated swimming pool, video games, clubhouse with family entertainment, amusement arcade,
plasma TV with Sky Sports, adventure playground with under 5s play area, children's club, sports
field, take away and launderette.
Club house/swimming pool passes can be obtained from reception priced at £5 per adult per week and £3 per child over 6 per week.
The beach is a 5 minute walk away. When the tide is in, it is pebbled but when the tide is out – that’s when you realise why it is called Winchelsea Sands! There is a park with a gated playground and plenty of space to let your dog run free leading up to the beach.
Turn right at the seawall and walk a further 5 minutes and you come across the best ‘greasy spoon’ in East Sussex! They do brilliant fry up breakfasts. Give yourself a morning off! You can access it from the road too, but the seawall is prettier.
If you want to do your own cooking, a Co-Op is conveniently next door to the park. It has a ‘hole in the wall’ cash dispenser. Fresh bread is delivered every morning.
Local Area
Winchelsea Sands is a couple of miles from the beautiful, historic town of Rye with its cobbled streets and ‘ye olde curiosity shop’ type architecture.
Don’t forget your camera! You get a superb view of Rye and the surrounding countryside from the top of St. Mary’s Church. There are great restaurants in Rye, too; The Fish Café has a terrific reputation but my personal favourite is Rye River Café, which is situated in the harbour. Although its name suggests egg and chips, it has a really good menu with great seafood and a really nice ambiance. My children’s favourite is Simply Italian – good for pizzas and pasta.
Turn right out of the park (passing the ‘greasy spoon’) and you come into Pett Level, where you will find The Smugglers’ Inn. It is child and pet friendly, and serves good home cooking and real ales. There is a garden at the front and patio at the back overlooking the sea, with an ice cream kiosk. They have a full carvery on Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes.
Theme nights and live music are regularly organised.
Continue on this road and you will come in to Hastings, where one day just isn’t enough; there is so much to do there. Our girls loved the trampolines on the sea front, the amusement arcades, the sea life centre, the crazy golf and the boating lake. We liked the fish and chips! The Old Town is similar to Rye with its cobbled streets and half timbered buildings, but walk through the tunnel linking old and new and it’s like walking through time.
You’ll find a myriad of modern stores to fulfil every retail dream! During the summer there are festivals and street parties organised; ask in the park reception for details.
If a beach holiday is what you're after, then the best beach on the south coast is a couple of miles past Rye – Camber Sands. It is hugely popular but there is always plenty of room on the beach – it goes on for miles.
There is a large car park (there is a fee to park there), a café and a beach shop selling wind breakers, lilos, buckets and spades etc. etc.
If you prefer to use public transport, there is a good bus service running to Camber, Rye, Hastings and beyond.
