Local Area
This small area of France, running up to the Italian border, is the only part of France to enjoy a true Mediterranean climate. For those who have not been to the area before, this means that during the summer months hot weather and sunshine are virtually guaranteed.
The best known town, and for many the great attraction of the immediate surroundings, is of course, St Tropez. It is an extremely attractive Provencal town with very good shopping facilities including many boutiques, discos, a small covered fish market by the quay and an excellent open air market in the main square on Tuesday and Saturday mornings.
There are many safe sandy beaches close by, the best know being Tahiti, Pampelonne and Paradigan.
For those who prefer something quieter there are many pleasant villages and small towns just inland and very picturesque trips can be made to such places as Grimaud, Port Grimaud (known locally as 'Little Venice' because of its many waterways). The villages of Ramatuelle, Cogolin and La Croix Valmer are also worth exploring. La Croix Valmer also provides a wide range of local shops, banks and a post office. A couple of hours away by car for anyone ambitious enough to tackle longer journeys, are the Gorges de Verdon, Nice and Monte Carlo, with the Italian border not much further.
There is a tremendous choice of restaurants providing a wide range of meals starting from reasonable prices. Most restaurants offer several fixed menus at different prices, which are usually very good value for money. For those families with young children, it is quite normal to ask for 'demi-couvert', in other words, one meal and two plates.
The local wines are very good and there are many domaines which can be visited. If you are able to buy wine in bulk, i.e. 2 litre containers or more, then the local wine co-operatives offer extremely good value. The nearest are Gogolin, Grimaud and St Tropez.
