The Witterings
'The Witterings' are 9 miles outside Chichester. They offer a clean, safe, shingle beach, but when the tide goes out you have a fantastic, safe, sandy beach to enjoy. The eye can see from Porstmouth to Selsey with great views of the Isle of Wight and the ships on the horizon. The Wittering Experience has a mixture of delights for both young and old! From buckets and spades to surfing, sunbathing, swimming, sailing, cycling, bird watching and walking! Horse-riding and golf are available at a village called Hunstan, off the Selsey Road. There is also a crazy golf and butterfly/animal sanctuary/nostalgia museum within 2 miles at Earnley.
The famous beaches of West Wittering are 3 minutes drive away and offer a large nature reserve with sandy beaches and sand dunes to explore. There are lifeguards, toilets, showers, a shop/cafe and ample parking. There is an entrance fee, but it’s worth it for the whole day; the price drops late afternoon. Great for evening walks around 'East Head' and to see the sunsets.
East Wittering, and our bungalow, is within a minute's walk of the shops. There is a Tesco Express and Co-op for food and supplies etc., plus a super range of greengrocers, butchers, gift and toy shops, plus a lovely baker’s and good old fashioned sweet shop - and just too many others to mention. East Wittering is quite self-sufficient.
At the sea front you will find a fishing hut where you can buy fresh fish, an ice-cream kiosk and small amusement arcade, plus a good family Pub!
Locally there are lots of the Chichester Harbours to explore like Itchenor, Dell Quay and Bosham, where King Canute is supposed to have tried to stop the sea coming in! Selsey is a few miles up the coast, then Pagaham harbour for the bird watchers and Bognor, with Butlins where you can get a day pass for the kids to use the swimming pools there.
Hayling Island is close enough for fairground attractions and narrow gauge train, then you have Southsea and Portsmouth for bigger attractions like the Aquarium, museums and ancient docks. For something different how about a day trip to the Isle of Wight via the Hovercraft!
